AUTHOR: Gottfried BennGottfried Benn, born in Mansfeld on 2 May 1886. 1905-1910 Studied medicine at the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy for Military Medical Education in Berlin. Licence to practise medicine. 1912 Publication of his first book of poems as a lyrical pamphlet: Morgue and other poems. 1913 Takes over the management of the Pathological Institute at the Municipal Hospital in Sophie-Charlottenstraße. 1914 Goes into the field as a military doctor. Takes part in the fighting in Belgium. 1915-1917 Senior physician in the Brussels military governorate. Discharged from the army. 1917 The collected poems are published by Verlag der Aktion under the title: "Fleisch". Gottfried Benn settles in Berlin as a specialist for skin and venereal diseases and runs his practice here until 1935. 1922 The Collected Writings are published by Erich Reiss Verlag in Berlin. 1932 Benn becomes a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, Poetry Department. 1933-1934 Temporarily under the spell of National Socialist ideology. 1935 Benn leaves Berlin and is reactivated as a colonel in Hanover. The Selected Poems appear, Benn's last publication during the Nazi era. Severe attacks against Benn in "Das Schwarze Korps" and in the "Völkischer Beobachter". 1937-1945 Benn is transferred to Berlin. Works in the military welfare system as an expert on welfare and pension issues. Expelled from the Reichsschrifttumskammer and banned from writing. 1943 transferred to Landsberg a.d. Warthe as senior physician. 1945 Return to Berlin. 1946-1948 Opening of practice. Publishing difficulties. 1951 Awarded the Büchner Prize in Darmstadt by the Academy for Language and Poetry. 1953 Benn gives up his medical practice. 1956 7 July. Death of Gottfried Benn in Berlin.
