Computer and communication networks are gaining increasing importance in global and local information systems (Inter/Intranets), as evidenced by the rapid increase in user numbers and data transfer volume, as well as the growing variety of multimedia applications and services. With the standardization of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), a service-integrating network infrastructure has been developed for the first time, addressing all requirements regarding bandwidth, real-time conditions, and transmission reliability, thereby efficiently supporting voice, video, and data transmissions. The book comprehensively presents the architecture and switching technology of ATM networks, along with the subsequent utilization possibilities of broadband ISDN. In addition to describing the protocol layer structure and modeling complex traffic management, it focuses on the relationships with alternative platforms for high-speed networks, particularly the Internet standard TCP/IP.
