Braunschweig

Initially only a meeting place for merchants, this stacking and trading centre grew into the metropolis of one of the most powerful principalities in Europe, the Duchy of Saxony. Henry the Lion made Brunswick his residence. Later, the city developed into an important member of the Hanseatic League with branches from London to Novgorod and in the middle of the 18th century became the artistic and intellectual centre of Lower Saxony. In 1918 Braunschweig was the first German "Socialist Republic" for a short time.
