Swiss literature has rarely seen a hero as politically incorrect as Patrick Tschan's Jack Breiter: he is a con artist and a braggart. He smuggles money, gold, and people, and does not hesitate to sell the Nazis the red for their swastika flag. Tschan creates a grand cinematic experience. Jack Breiter lost big last night: money, job, food, lodging, face, reputation. Tomorrow, he feared, they would tar and feather him, bind him to a waxed railway threshold of the Rhaetian Railway, and send him down the bobsled track amidst the cheers of the locals and the delight of the well-off holidaymakers. 1929: Jack Breiter is anything but a lucky child. Born into a poor Swiss farming family, he is determined to rise. First as an unsuccessful marriage swindler in the prestigious Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, later as a sales representative in the chemical industry.
