Eberhard von Groote: Tagebuch 1815-1824

Eberhard von Groote's diary from the years 1815 to 1824 is one of the few detailed personal accounts from the early Prussian years in Cologne. It provides a vivid insight into everyday life in Cologne and the rapid political and social changes under the new rulers. The third volume of the diary edition includes Groote's records, letters, writings, and poems from the year 1817. It was a tumultuous year for Cologne, marked by a severe hunger crisis and growing dissatisfaction with state policies, foreshadowing the intense conflicts of the coming years. Groote, an engaged actor with cultural-political goals, not only comments on political discussions and events in his texts but also describes a variety of aspects of his daily life: family relationships, conflicts over leases and inheritances, theater and concert visits, as well as trips to Koblenz and Düsseldorf. Groote continued his Germanic-historical projects, during which he maintained a lively correspondence with Joseph Görres, Jakob Grimm, and Sulpiz Boisserée.
