Black Sea

Following the grand reviews, last autumn we received the German Photo Book Award for our mare photo book from last year. This September, this year's edition will be released, marking the fourth volume. Once again, we sent a photographer in search of new perspectives on an old sea. Over many months, British photographer Vanessa Winship traveled to the shores of the Black Sea eight times. She exclusively photographed in black and white during her journeys through the six coastal countries of Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia. These trips were like journeys back to past decades. Silent fishing villages in Romania, monumental splendor from the Stalin era in Russia, devout Orthodox believers in prayer in Georgia, eager students in Ukraine, proud wrestlers in Turkey, or archaic donkey carts in Bulgaria – Vanessa Winship consistently captured images full of melancholy.
