Bishnu Dey was a significant Bengali poet, prose writer, translator, academic, and art critic during the era of Modernism and Postmodernism. He started as a Symbolist and gained recognition for the musical quality of his poems. He belongs to the post-Tagore generation of Bengali poets, such as Buddhadeb Basu and Samar Sen, who marked the beginning of the "New Poetry" in Bengali literature, which was heavily influenced by Marxist ideology. He even published a poetry magazine for a time, promoting socially conscious writing.
