Product details
A man receives pain medication. A woman gets something for her nerves. How female pain is underestimated, overlooked, and devalued. A feminist exploration: men are expected to be strong, while women supposedly are not. Yet, women give birth and endure painful periods, suffer more frequently from chronic pain, and are more affected by domestic and sexual violence. At the same time, their pain is taken less seriously and is more quickly silenced: for every pain-medication-dependent man, there are four women.
What must women endure, and what do they inflict upon themselves? Is there a specific form of female pain, and if so, where does it originate? And what could a world look like where female pain is heard? In her first book 'Unabhängig' (Independent), Eva Biringer demonstrates how primarily women numb themselves with alcohol to function in a world that is against them. With 'Versehrt' (Injured), she highlights the wound of a society that systematically devalues, silences, and simultaneously fetishizes women's pain. In a world where male bodies are still the norm in medicine, pain is accepted as currency for performance and pleasure, while its involuntary variant is numbed or devalued.
An autobiographical plea to take female pain seriously and a call to all women to transform it into something powerful. The first German-language book about the Gender Pain Gap.
