Biomedication with mangosteen extract and 9-xanthene xanthone

Mangosteen extract (Garcinia Mangostana Lynn) has antibacterial properties against infections of the respiratory and digestive tracts. In this study, the antibacterial in vitro activity of selected bacteria was observed. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the mangosteen extract and the mixture of various biomedical compounds varied in concentration. The results showed a significant difference (P<0.05) in the bacterial inhibition levels for enterobacteria between the mixtures of the biomedicines. The effect of orally administered mangosteen extract was also observed in Holstein-Friesian calves during lactation. The variables of weight gain, calf size, and quantification of colony-forming units (CFU) of pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria during lactation were recorded. The results indicated that the daily consumption of concentrate feed significantly affected weight gain and that the consumption of milk replacer in liquid form showed a significant difference (P<0.05) due to the effect of the mangosteen extract, resulting in higher nutrient intake in calves.
