The four-volume encyclopedia contains around 6,400 biographies of Austrian women, as well as references to biographical traces of women from Roman times to the present, including the birth year 1938, and focuses on a sphere of influence within the geographical boundaries of present-day Austria. It impressively showcases the contributions of women in politics, society, culture, and history, thereby venturing into new biographical territory in many areas and opening up new research perspectives. The concept of the encyclopedia is based on the theoretical considerations of feminist biographical research, which allows for the reflection and appreciation of female life stories in their gender-specific significance. The encyclopedia is part of the multimodal documentation, research, and networking project "biografiA. Biographical Database and Encyclopedia of Austrian Women.".
