In the autumnal Goms, the hunting fever is in the air. Right at the beginning of the hunting season, a hunting accident occurs: a game warden is shot by a hunter. The fact that the victim is a declared opponent and the shooter is a committed friend of the wolf raises suspicions among the investigators. La Grande Dame of Ernen, Madame Charlotte de Steinhaus, is worried about her nephew. He, a lawyer and notary and also a hunter, has received anonymous letters threatening him with death. Madame Charlotte turns to former police officer "Chüzz" Walpen. He is to find out who sent the letters and dissuade the notary from going hunting. Inspector Alain Gsponer is searching the Goms side valleys and the Altesch area for possible perpetrators; in his eyes, every single hunter is a suspect. Only reluctantly does Chief Public Prosecutor Gitsch accept that Ria Ritz, the head of the post office in Fiesch, is assisting Gsponer in his work. The fact that Kauz, along with his loyal dog Max, also gets involved in the investigations is even more of a thorn in his side, as the inquiries lead down winding paths deep into Goms' history and ultimately uncover a terrible truth.
