In "BilderBildung," among other things, the focus is on the significance of images for political education. Sebastian Schädler examines several key concepts in current debates: authenticity, identity, competence, body, linearity. He also provides answers to specific questions: Why does the German education system struggle so much with digitally supported education? What do people aim to achieve when they visit wax museums and take selfies? Why do individuals want to optimize their bodies? What is the connection to the history of Christianity, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, French philosophy, psychoanalysis, feminist theory, identity politics, and the debate about media literacy? The uniqueness of the book lies in the fact that images and texts argue equally: there are ten essays in text form and ten in image form. The text introduces and concludes each keyword. Scientific, art historical, and philosophical references range from Renaissance painting to Freud, from Kepler to Butler, from Warburg to Foucault and Derrida – yet the framing remains personal. The author invites readers on an associative journey: "You arrive somewhere different than where you started, and you do not end up where you might have initially intended.
