How does one maintain self-respect in a historical era when humanity is losing its dignity?
We need a new guiding principle for the planetary crisis. The old model of continuous economic growth, driven by greed, envy, and the pursuit of dominance, is leading us toward a global catastrophe. The most obvious reason (among many) is the close correlation between growth and carbon dioxide emissions.
We need to be honest with ourselves!
Realistically, our options are already limited to damage control and intelligent crisis management. Intellectual honesty, compassion, and a certain form of inner awareness are what we urgently need for mental and political resilience. The concept of a culture of consciousness serves as the starting point for a new debate.
For more compassion and radical self-respect
For more than thirty years, we have failed with our eyes wide open. Alongside our lack of self-respect and the absence of compassion for future generations, one of the main causes of the impending planetary crisis has been a lack of cultural creativity: we have been unable to leave behind old values and create alternative guiding principles. This is urgently needed to establish a new cultural context for exiting the growth model. We need a culture of consciousness that operates on both individual and societal levels. This book outlines the pathways to achieve that.
We need a radical new culture of consciousness
Many of us have little compassion and no respect for the individuals and sentient beings who will inhabit this planet after us. This leads to a point where we can no longer take ourselves seriously as rational beings, as we have willfully ignored empirical facts for decades and organized our own self-deception on a political level.
