Studies on microhardness and fracture toughness were conducted on various non-oxide ceramics. These ceramics include silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and silicon nitride composites. The microhardness measurements of these ceramics, i.e., Vickers and Knoop, were carried out using diamond indenters. Various influences of load and duration of indentation on the hardness values of these ceramics were examined in detail. The fracture toughness of these ceramics was also investigated using the Vickers indentation method. The Vickers and Knoop hardness of these ceramics decreases with increasing load, and a similar effect was observed with increasing duration of exposure. The fracture toughness of TiN-doped silicon nitride is higher than that of other ceramics, and boron and carbon-doped silicon carbide exhibits higher hardness compared to other ceramics.
