Product details

Since discovering photography in the late 1970s, Bettina Rheims has challenged conventional expectations. From her series on the strippers of Pigalle (1980) to the cycle on the life of Jesus in I.N.R.I. (1998), from her Chanel advertisements to gender studies (2011): in her work, she has significantly shaken up traditional iconography and tirelessly explored the intersection between two realms that have fascinated people for ages – beauty and imperfection. For this volume, Rheims has compiled over 300 of her favorite images from the past 35 years – bold and provocative photography from renowned series such as Chambre close, Héroïnes, and Rose, c’est Paris (in collaboration with Serge Bramly). The fashion photographs as well as the artistic images in this book showcase Bettina Rheims' unique perspective on the fragility and strength of women. The magical encounter between the artist and her models breaks with traditional codes of eroticism and leads to an entirely new visual language of femininity.
