With the death of Hilla Becher in October 2015, an era has come to an end. The Schirmer/Mosel Verlag bids farewell to its long-time author team Bernd and Hilla Becher with a final grand gesture: In two interviews, the artists provide insight into their unique work, sharing stories of sacrifices and successes, their recording techniques, and their lives as artists and art educators at the Düsseldorf Academy. The media scholar and writer Ulf Erdmann Ziegler conducted the couple's first extensive interview in 2002, published in Art in America. Ziegler distills the motivations that led the Bechers to their formally strict, encyclopedic series of images of blast furnaces, water towers, half-timbered houses, etc., bringing the authors behind the images to life.
