Product details
Until well into the 19th century, individual mills and excursion restaurants "settled" the sandy high plateau of Teltow. Then, the expanding metropolis of Berlin demanded natural living space. From 1866 onwards, there was a surge in construction activity in the Berliner Westend, located far outside the city gates. Stephan Brandt guides the reader through both Old and New Westend, as well as through Fürstenbrunn, Pichelsberg, and the settlements of Ruhleben, Heerstrasse, and Eichkamp, which were combined a few years ago into the Westend district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Although many residents of the individual settlements do not consider themselves Westenders, the developments presented in the book demonstrate the close interconnection of these areas. With over 200 largely unpublished old views from the late 19th century to the 1960s, Brandt invites readers to take a stroll into the past of his home district, where large events at the exhibition and Olympic grounds intersect with the everyday lives of the bourgeoisie and the petty bourgeoisie. The images evoke the lives and learning experiences of health-compromised city children in the forest school and show the development of today’s Theodor-Heuss-Platz from its beginnings as a subway station in the green field to a bustling traffic hub. They invite the reader to enjoy an entertaining journey through the history of Westend.
