Product details
In just one century, Berlin underwent several fundamental transformations: from incredible growth to destruction and subsequent survival as a Siamese twin. The later of these formative phases in particular were characterised by stagnation or even shrinkage and strengthened Berlin's already unusual settlement form without a clear centre. The changing dynamics of completely opposing political driving forces have produced a variety of spatial characteristics that have not yet been remodelled, especially on the outskirts of the city. Berlin Maps maps these phenomena and shows them: The border as a special space is richer than Belin's gentrified city centre has become in the meantime. And Berlin is also growing enormously on the periphery, almost unnoticed. Only those who also understand the transition between Berlin and Brandenburg as a space will discover the hidden potential that can form the basis for qualified and innovative urban development. Berlin Maps therefore places the edge of the city at the centre of attention. Berlin's special, strange or undiscovered phenomena are mapped in 18 thematic areas and always considered together with the surrounding area, such as natural and artificial mountains, escape tunnels and enclaves, Berlin's four walls, swamps and moors. Architectural geography, urban history, political upheavals, scenic spaces and curiosities are presented with relish in illustrative overview maps and individual drawings.
