Bergastrilde

Bergastrild (Cryptospiza) is a genus within the family of waxbills. The genus comprises only four species, three of which are considered to be of least concern. The fourth, Shelley’s Bergastrild, is classified as endangered by the IUCN due to its low population numbers. Bergastrilds reach a body length of between twelve and fourteen centimeters. A characteristic feature of the genus is the very short beak, with the nostrils completely covered by feathers. The wings and tail are short and rounded. Reichenow's Bergastrild, Jackson's Bergastrild, and Shelley’s Bergastrild all have red color patches on their heads; these are absent in Salvador's Bergastrild. All four species are mountain birds. Two of the species, Jackson's Bergastrild and Shelley’s Bergastrild, are found exclusively in the Albertine Rift.
