Benoni, a postman in a town in Nordland and completely hopelessly in love with Rosa, is hired by the rich merchant Mack and sent fishing off the Lofoten Islands - and eventually almost becomes his right-hand man. To assure himself of Benoni, the all-powerful Mack persuades his godchild Rosa to get engaged to him.
