Behemoth

Franz Neumann's "Behemoth" is today considered a "modern classic" of social science. Published in 1942 during the decisive phase of World War II, the book offered the first overall account of Hitler's Germany from the pen of an émigré and for a time served the American authorities as a kind of manual for waging war against Hitler. Neumann's comprehensive and knowledgeable analysis remains a unique challenge to the interpretation of fascism. The work is now available again in a new edition with a preface by Alfons Söllner, who outlines the biography of Franz Neumann as the formation of an epoch-typical scholar - the "political scholar" and with an afterword by Michael Wildt, who places the "Behemoth" in the context of international Nazi research and in particular asks why its reception in historis.
