The assessment guidelines for driving suitability (BGL), published by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), are an essential document for evaluating drivers whose fitness to drive is in question. Since their initial publication in 2000, they have been significantly expanded and fundamentally revised in parts. This also necessitated a revision of the BGL commentary. The long-awaited third edition of this well-established standard work reflects the status of the BGL as of May 24, 2018, and continues to be an important aid for the practical assessment of the physical and mental fitness of motor vehicle operators. Among other things, a new introduction to the systematics of driving suitability assessment and a fundamentally new approach to cardiovascular diseases have been included.
