Criminologists and other professionals dealing with issues of deviance are increasingly in the spotlight of public criticism, as many citizens feel insecure and even threatened in their daily lives: whether by youths, foreigners, serial killers, pedophiles, or reckless drivers. Are the fears of citizens based solely on the subjective perceptions of anxious individuals? What are the real risks and threats in our society?
