There are numerous books and studies on the topic of employee leadership. However, even if leaders believe they have internalized the content, a Gallup study from 2017 shows that there is a significant gap between self-perception and external perception among leaders. According to the study, 69 percent of employees have had at least one bad supervisor, while 97 percent of bosses consider themselves to be good leaders. A study by the personnel consultancy Rochus Mummert even states that two out of three employees believe their supervisors are professionally unqualified. Almost one in three considers their supervisor to be lacking in character qualifications. The author is convinced that, as in many interpersonal situations, it is not enough to blame only the supervisors, who—despite having internalized all the literature—will never be perfect leaders.
