Just over 10,000 years ago, some Sapiens made a decision that would dramatically change the course of history: they began experimenting with wheat. Soon, the world was no longer populated by a relatively small number of healthy, equal, and free hunter-gatherers, but by a much larger number of hard-working, poorly nourished, and sick farmers. The agricultural revolution laid the foundation for more complex social and political structures. Kingdoms and empires emerged. Yet for most people, life became worse. They became slaves to wheat and had to perform labor in the fields for which their bodies were not suited. At the same time, inequality entered the world. Without the agricultural revolution, our current prosperity would not exist, but it was made possible at the expense of generations of unhappy farmers.
