London 1887: The British colonial rulers in Africa and Asia are at the height of their power. But Edgar Drake, a piano tuner who has never left Great Britain, knows little about the violent crimes taking place far away - until his quiet life is suddenly turned upside down: Why is the British War Office sending him to the embattled jungles of Burma to repair a grand piano? The piano belongs to Anthony Carrol, a military doctor stationed there, who uses the instrument to conduct a peaceful dialogue with the locals through the power of music. Defying the brutality of war in this way impresses Drake, and he accepts the assignment. And indeed, in Burma he not only falls for the exotic landscape and the foreign customs, but also for the charismatic doctor Carrol. Even when the work on the piano has long been completed, he does not manage to detach himself from this fascinating world - with fatal consequences.
