Product details

Bautzen is first mentioned as a fortified settlement in 1002 in the chronicle of Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg. Since then, 1,000 years of a tumultuous history have passed. During this time, Bautzen, known by its Sorbian name Budysin, has been developed and shaped in various ways by its German and Sorbian inhabitants. The extent to which the face of the city has changed over the past 100 years can be traced through historical images. From the wealth of archival images, only a selection of changes and losses can be presented to outline life in Bautzen. More than 200 historical images cover the period from 1900 to the 1980s. During this time, high-rise buildings still dominated the cityscape, old houses were demolished, and the tower of St. Peter's Cathedral was scaffolded and restored. The picture book aims to provide insight for the people of Bautzen.
