"I would prefer not to." Bartleby is the hero of all those who say no. As a scrivener in a New York law firm, he is actually the ideal employee: dedicated, diligent, upright, and quiet. Yet, softly and meekly, he repeatedly utters the one sentence that drives his superiors to despair. Bartleby would prefer not to proofread copies. He would prefer not to run errands. Ultimately, he does not want to write at all anymore. However, he also does not want to leave the firm. And he remains—unfazed, silent, and resistant to every encouragement, every threat, and every form of assistance.
