Schmidt, ArnoArno Schmidt was born in Hamburg on 18 January 1914. After being released from an English prisoner of war shortly after the end of the Second World War, he first worked as an interpreter and from 1947 as a freelance writer. After working in Cordingen, Kastel an der Saar and Darmstadt, he moved with his wife Alice to Bargfeld (Celle district) in 1958, where he lived in seclusion until his death. From 1949, when his story Leviathan appeared in book form, he wrote novels, dialogues on literature for radio, essays and biographical works, including his main work Zettel's Traum, 1334 DIN-A3 pages thick and weighing over ten kilos. Due to its complex layout, it could only be published in 1970 as a facsimile of the typescript; it has only been available in typeset form since 2010. Arno Schmidt died on 3 June 1979 in Celle. Two years after his death, his wife Alice and Jan Philipp Reemtsma founded the Arno Schmidt Foundation.
