Rhyme dictionaries in High German are commonplace. Many a poet, both great and small, has used such a reference book when writing poetry. However, until now, anyone who wanted to draft verses in Bernese German had to do without such a support.
Now the dictionary by Werner Marti and Werner Hiltbrunner offers a remedy. The extensive index of rhyming syllables and words presented in the main part takes into account Bernese German words as they are known between the Jura and the Oberland, including the peripheral areas.
For practical use, the explanations of phonation and spelling serve.
With the chapter "Sense, Rhyme, Rhythm" beginners are encouraged to do their own deeds, and advanced readers can benefit from the trouvailles: in the appendix poetry of well-known Bernese authors from Ernst Balzli to Polo Hofer. How differently rhymed in dialect, whether Gottlieb Jakob Kuhn, Kurt Marti, Mani Matter or Peter Reber - hardly any rhyming structure resembles the other.
