When Sydney returns to the beach of St. Ives after more than thirty years, she is confronted not only with the most painful moment from her past but also meets a series of quirky individuals whose lives are no less chaotic than her own: dental technician Maria bakes muffins with healing powers, bookseller Dexter is done with love and sometimes enjoys wearing dresses, and Belle, in her late twenties, still lives with her parents and takes care of the neighbors' pot-bellied pig.
