The Swiss educator Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827) already held the view that the individual, who should be nurtured holistically with head, heart, and hand, is at the center of educational thought and action. Numerous educational concepts still rely on this reform pedagogy approach, aiming to consider and meet the individual needs of a child. An authentic form of learning is provided by animal-assisted education. This thesis examines this topic from various aspects. It presents the historical development as well as the current status of the recognition of animal-assisted educational interventions. A historical exploration of the subject is necessary to understand and analyze the current state of the discipline. The thesis will also address why this field, despite its increasing establishment over the past 30 years, still leads a niche existence. At the same time, it aims to draw attention to animal-assisted education, which has received comparatively little attention to date in contrast to animal-assisted therapy.
