This study deals with the question of what significance one-sided gender attributions can have for children's development. It sheds light on how children themselves perceive gender attributions and deal with them. It then looks at the influence that schools and teachers can and should have on the development of critical reflection on one-sided gender attributions. In this context, a practical school example is provided by presenting a teaching sequence on the topic of gender stereotypes in primary school German lessons and explaining how a direct approach to the topic can be created without overwhelming the pupils. The teaching unit should be suitable for grades 1 to 3. As the unit is based around a picture book, we will first explain what a picture book is and what relevance picture books can have for children's socialisation. We will discuss which picture books might be suitable for addressing gender stereotypes with primary school children and present the picture book that is the focus of this study.
