The economic and financial crisis made it painfully clear to people that our system world is a very sensitive one and that disruptions in one area can lead to serious impairments of the entire system. The fragility of the world system was already being addressed by a number of scientists in 1970, including Dennis L. Meadows, on behalf of the Club of Rome. They were worried about the world at the time, even though it had just gone through decades of unchecked growth. Welfare states were expanded and offered a life in security.
