For companies of all sizes, insurance is playing an increasingly important role. To allow all forces to concentrate on the core business of the company, transferring risks to insurance companies as new risk carriers makes sense. This work examines which risks can fundamentally be insured. Criteria and limits of insurability are presented in this context. Particularly in light of the recent economic crisis, the existence and complete implementation of a risk management process is essential for large companies. The significance of insurance as a risk transfer measure and insurance management within the risk management process is demonstrated through the evaluation of three studies that have investigated this issue in detail. The conclusion of insurance policies should be carried out systematically with regard to cost efficiency. With the help of an optimal insurance strategy, the decision between risk transfer and risk retention can be based on solid grounds. This publication also explores the classification of corporate insurance management within companies and the development of national and international insurance programs.
