When a Jewish merchant is murdered by a member of a respected Hamburg bourgeois family, the members of the Jewish community have to accept the crime so as not to antagonise anyone. Only the young Rebekka Lipmann cannot accept this and, together with her husband Schmuel, begins an investigation that takes her through the backstreet synagogues, trading exchanges, taverns and entertainment districts of early Hamburg ...The story is based on a historical criminal case from 1687, which Glückel von Hameln describes in her memoirs.Glückel von Hameln, born Glikl bas Judah Leib in 1647, was married at an early age to Chajim, who was only a few years her senior. Chajim died in 1691, leaving Glikl the debt-ridden business and 14 children, eight of whom were still unmarried. Glikl began to write down her life "so as not to succumb to gloom for good", as she introduces her autobiography.
