Austerlitz

Jacques Austerlitz is the name of the enigmatic stranger the narrator once met in a dark station concourse. When chance brings the two men together again, the life story of this melancholy wanderer is revealed step by step. Austerlitz, who has lived in London for many years, is not an Englishman. He came to Wales in the 1940s as a Jewish refugee child. The boy grows up with a preacher and his wife, and when after many years he learns his true origin, he knows why he feels like a stranger among the people. In his novel, W. G. Sebald follows the story of an uprooted man who can no longer find a home.
