Marina Tsvetaeva, alongside Anna Akhmatova, is one of the most significant Russian poets of the 20th century, and her prose unmistakably reflects her lyrical nature. Whether she depicts the chaos of the revolutionary and civil war years in her diary prose or evokes lost childhood paradises in her autobiographical stories, the language—associative, lyrical, and intense—always takes center stage. This volume gathers texts from different phases of her life: The Moscow Notebooks from 1917-1921 testify to the turmoil of revolution and war. "About Germany" sketches an ideal image of a place of the spirit, which quickly deteriorates during her years of exile. In 1933, amidst the hardships of exile, Tsvetaeva begins to reflect on her earliest experiences in autobiographical stories: sheltered yet restless early years marked by various milestones.
