Domenico Scarlatti is now regarded as one of the great piano composers in music history and as the first true virtuoso at the piano. This selection includes 24 sonatas from various periods of his work, providing an overview of the Italian composer's diverse styles, who worked at the Spanish court. With characteristic themes, song-like natural melodies, and dance-like movements, Scarlatti overcomes all the heaviness of the Baroque. The technical aspect is formative in his single-movement sonatas. For the first time in the history of piano music, the player must navigate wide leaps and hand crossings. The foreword by renowned pianist Bengt Johnsson provides insight into Scarlatti's development and the various sources on which this edition is based. Some sonatas appear here for the first time in print. As an additional treat, an original preface is included, which was presented in 1738 in a music edition of 30 of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas. It is very enlightening for understanding Scarlatti's piano music.
