The Last Witnesses of Auschwitz. On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp. More than a million people had been murdered here by the Nazis; only a few prisoners survived. Those who survived the camp often could or would not speak about their experiences in the years following liberation. They felt unable to talk about the excesses of degradation they endured in Auschwitz, or they found no one willing to listen to their memories. Worldwide, SPIEGEL editors and staff have now visited and interviewed former inmates of the concentration camp. Susanne Beyer and Martin Doerry have compiled these accounts into a book.
