The lack of well-known female artists in modern times can be attributed, on one hand, to the fact that society was not structured in their favor, and on the other hand, to the early art historiography largely overlooking them. Only a few women were fortunate enough to grow up in an artistic environment where institutional and societal obstacles did not or only partially hindered their rise. The catalog for the namesake cabinet exhibition at the Semperbau in Dresden focuses on several famous female painters and printmakers from the 16th to 18th centuries, presenting them through selected paintings, engravings, and etchings. Five essays and eleven catalog texts shed light on these works from the Old Masters Picture Gallery and the Cabinet of Prints and Drawings, showcasing their extraordinary creators, including Marietta Robusti, Lavinia Fontana, Diana Scultori, and Angelika Kauffmann.
