Aufzeichnungen eines Krokodils

In 1980s Taipei, shortly after the lifting of martial law, students at an elite university struggle to design their lives according to their own beliefs. But what could such a life actually look like? Concepts of freedom, love, and life must be redefined for them. Part of this group of headstrong outsiders is Lazi, who falls in love with her older classmate Shui Ling and initially denies her feelings until they become an obsession. Lazi processes her thoughts and emotions in a collage of texts. Sometimes she writes diary entries, sometimes poems, or parables about crocodiles that disguise themselves in human clothing to avoid drawing attention in public, while having a fondness for cream puffs and furs. With humor and depth, Lazi recounts the highs of a new love and the suffering she endures due to homophobia, misogyny, and traditional gender roles. Thus, "The Records of a Crocodile" anticipates a debate about queer identities and representation that is more relevant than ever, nearly thirty years after the book's publication.
