"At nine o'clock she's gone," it says at the end of The Captives, and "Mademoiselle Albertine is gone," it sounds like an echo at the beginning of The Fugitives, the sixth volume of the Recherche. If Marcel had just been tired of Albertine, he now tries to win back the fugitive by all means, but in vain: her letter of reconciliation is overtaken by the telegram in which he is informed of her death.
