In September 2013, 100 years after the publication of the first volume of "In Search of Lost Time," a new translation of Marcel Proust's masterpiece began to be released by Reclam. This is the first complete translation by a single hand and also the first to be based on the definitive French text established only in the 1980s. Each volume of this edition includes a detailed commentary that provides the historical and cultural information the reader expects. "The Fugitive" is the sixth volume of the seven-part novel.

Albertine has left – this marks the end of Volume 5. Marcel now tries to win her back with the help of emissaries and letters full of promises. This seems to be working, as in her last letter she expresses her willingness to return. However, this letter is soon overshadowed by a telegram in which Albertine's aunt informs the narrator that her niece has been fatally injured in a riding accident. The following chapters are marked by grief and the process of mourning. Marcel initially seeks to understand Albertine's homosexuality and only begins to take an interest in other women after a gradual process of forgetting. During a walk in the Bois, he encounters his youthful love, Gilberte, again. She has since inherited wealth and has become the darling of Faubourg Saint-Germain as Mademoiselle de Forcheville. He travels to Venice with his mother, where he finally becomes completely indifferent to Albertine. On the way home, he learns of Gilberte's marriage to Robert de Saint-Loup. Back in France, Marcel visits the now pregnant "straw widow" Gilberte de Saint-Loup, who is living in Tansonville, while her husband is still in the military and has surprisingly embarked on an extramarital affair.
