This is largely due to the fact that European integration is not a linear process, but rather a story full of breaks and contradictions. "A Brief History of the European Union" offers a historical introduction to the complex European unification process – from its beginnings to the present. In a compact overview, it addresses both the key stages of the unification process and highlights the motives, concepts, and backgrounds that shaped Europe's long path to union. Jürgen Mittag, Dr. phil., is the managing director of the Institute for Social Movements at Ruhr University Bochum. He has published numerous books and articles on the history and politics of European integration.
