Architectural patterns, such as Model-View-Controller, are generalized, elegant solutions to common problems in software design. They encompass many fundamental ideas in computer science. This book demonstrates how architectural patterns can be addressed in secondary education computer science classes to help students understand computer systems. After a thorough analysis of eight object-oriented architectural patterns based on five criteria, five patterns are selected for which detailed teaching examples are provided. Students examine the externally visible behavior, internal structure, and implementation details of learning programs that can be freely downloaded from the author's homepage. The author presents worksheets with UML diagrams, as well as programming tasks in Java and Prolog, including sample solutions, while specifying the necessary prior knowledge, learning objectives, and potential learning difficulties. This book offers a variety of suggestions for designing one's own lessons. It is aimed at computer science teachers, teacher education students in computer science, and computer science educators.
