Product details
The Architecture Guide Zurich documents buildings and ensembles in the city from all eras, with a focus on structures from 1850 onwards. This marked the beginning of Zurich's architectural journey, transforming the city into what it is today: the largest metropolitan area and economic center of Switzerland. The guide focuses on the urban area but also looks beyond, including highlights from the rapidly growing regions of Glattal and Limmattal. The book is organized by objects, arranged according to the district and neighborhood divisions of Zurich. Introductory texts and essays on urban development by specialists provide an overview of the construction activities in Zurich. Neighborhood maps offer geographical orientation. All approximately 1,200 buildings, parks, squares, and infrastructure projects were selected based on their architectural quality, significance for the urban space, and their historical role in the city. There is also room for unexpected objects, and architectural missteps are included in the book as long as they are relevant to urban planning and characteristic of their time. Each object is depicted in at least one current or historical photograph, and a plan is provided for the majority of the objects.
