Architekturführer Winterthur

The architecture guide to Winterthur documents buildings and ensembles from all eras in the city. The main focus is on the period from 1830 onwards, when Winterthur's industrial career began. The guide looks at the city area and beyond, for example, at the prototypical suburban community of Illnau-Effretikon.

The publication is organized according to the districts and neighborhoods of Winterthur. Introductory texts and essays on urban development by experts provide an overview of the construction activities in the city, and neighborhood plans offer geographical orientation.

All approximately 600 buildings, parks, squares, and infrastructure projects were selected based on their architectural quality, their significance for the urban space, and their historical role in the city. There is also room for unexpected objects, and architectural missteps are included in the book as long as they are relevant to urban planning and typical of their time. A number of unrealized or abandoned buildings complete the content menu. Each object is depicted in at least one current or historical photograph, and a plan is shown for the majority of the buildings.
