In 1996, the municipality of Basel was awarded the Swiss Wakker Prize for its exemplary local image protection. The successful combination of preserving old structures with the creation of new building substance impressed the jury. The commitment of architects and urban planners extends into the future to uphold its reputation as a "city with a special architectural culture." Alongside projects by renowned architects, a variety of works by other architects find their place in the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Baselland.
