Raw materials have always been in high demand and indispensable. Access to raw materials and resources, such as stone, metal ores, coal, peat, salt, as well as amber, antlers, bones, animal hides, flax, and wool, has played a crucial role throughout human history. Alliances were forged, trade routes established, and networks built for the sake of raw materials. Availability or scarcity led to innovations and new techniques, but also to conflicts and disputes. Raw materials were processed, transported, negotiated, manufactured, recycled, and only the completely unusable product was ultimately disposed of. This year's focus of archaeology in Lower Saxony is dedicated to the diverse wealth of raw materials and the associated dependencies of humans and the environment.
